As a literary manager, one of the questions I hear most often is "Am I ready for representation?" But you don't actually dream of being repped, do you? You dream of being paid to write for a living.
I'm am very literal and linearly minded, so I really appreciate how you've laid this out in a step by step way that's so comprehensible and easy to follow. I live on the opposite side of the country from LA, so that provides a networking challenge, but these steps are still doable and possible to follow. Thank you!
Thanks, Sarah! I have noticed that so much advice about how to succeed in entertainment is soft and scattered, but I am a very strategic and to do list oriented person, so I wanted to give ideas that are more direct. Networking can be challenging for people who live outside of Los Angeles, but these days with technology it's more doable than ever.
Yes, that's what I've heard, and I'm grateful for the opportunities technology provides! I also keep thinking about an interview I saw with Jason Alexander about actors these days finding most success by creating their own stuff and making their own opportunities, and that applies equally to writers these days, I think. I think it's a lot less direct and a lot more entrepreneurial, especially post-pandemic. And the good news is, that can be done from anywhere.
My work has been read by many of which are on your list, I am slowly plugging along up the ladder for more "street cred." It's a grind at times, but I am also reminded of my ascension to cinematographer and director, granted I was up and coming then... Anyway, most and almost all feedback has been positive, so I am quite encouraged by those who are taking notice. As for the networking, even for those of us with resume's in filmmaking, networking yourself as a screenwriter has its challenges, (heck networking yourself as an accomplished and established cinematographer and director has its challenges ;-) ) I have a lot of empathy for those outside, who are way more talented than they may ever know.
Audrey, you’ve done it* again!
*written a helpful, actionable article set out in a logical order and filled with meaningful examples that clarify all the key points.
Thanks, Matt! Glad you're enjoying it.
Oh, I'm all-in on anyone/anything that can cast a little light on the industry.
Such valuable info and so clearly and cogently written. Thank you Audrey!
Thanks Tom! Glad you find it helpful.

I absolutely agree with this!
Ok good, haha! I'm not new to writing, but am new to the entertainment biz so the expert confirmation is definitely appreciated!
